PROFILE

Dr. iur. Antonios G. Karampatzos completed his undergraduate studies at the Law School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2000). Between 2000-2004 he obtained his LL.M. and PhD at the Law School of University of Tübingen (Germany), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. iur. Dres hc Harm Peter Westermann. His PhD-thesis –which was unanimously accepted with “summa cum laude” (excellent)– concerned contracts with protective effects towards third parties and the liability of financial experts for pure economic loss; its title in German read, namely, as follows: “Vom Vertrag mit Schutzwirkung für Dritte zur deliktischen berufsbezogenen Vertrauenshaftung – Zugleich ein Beitrag zum Ersatz fahrlässig verursachter reiner Vermögensschäden” (Nomos Verlag, 2005).

After his stay in Germany, he carried out post-doctoral research (post-doc) in London at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies of University College London. His post-doc research was presented in his paper under the title Supervening Hardship as Subdivision of the General Frustration Rule: A Comparative Analysis with Reference to Anglo-American, German, French and Greek Law” (European Review of Private Law 2/2005, pp. 105-147).

He is Professor of Civil Law at the Law Faculty of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (initially appointed in 2007 as Lecturer) and visiting Professor at the University of Piraeus (since 2015). He has been a visiting scholar at the School of Law of UC Berkeley (USA) in the field of behavioral law & Economics (2015) as well as an academic visitor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford (UK) in the field of jurisprudence.

His areas of interest include private law, legal theory, jurisprudence, economic analysis of law and behavioral law and economics. He teaches Law of Obligations, Advanced Lessons on Civil Law, Seminar of Civil Law, Law & Economics, Financial Crisis & Private Law, Legal Methodology, Contracts of the Modern Economy.


Dr. iur. Karampatzos has participated in various international conferences such as:

- The online European Law Institute (ELI) High Level Expert Group Meeting on “Nudges as Enablers of Sustainable Living: Identifying their Potential and Legal Challenge” (07.12.22), whereby presentation under the title “Nudges – The Basics (notion, characteristics, and degrees of nudges and their role in EU Law)”.
- The Master’s Program on “Law and Economics” at Utrecht University School of Law (20.02.23), whereby presentation under the title “Behavioural Economics and Consumer Protection: From Light-touch Regulation to Mandatory Rules”.

- The international Workshop with the title “Regulatory Contract Law”, which was organized at the Zurich University (02-05.07.25) under the auspices of the Centre for Regulation & Contract Law (CRCL) and the Swiss National Science Foundation, whereby presentation under the title “Nudging and Regulation in Contract Law”.
- The 4th GenAI Summit, which took place in Athens (24.11.25) –and was organized with the support of the European Investment Bank, the Liaison Office of the European Parliament in Greece, the Representation of the European Commission in Greece, the HDB, the HDBI, and under the auspices of the Ministry of Digital Governance of Greece–, whereby moderation of a panel with the title “EU AI Act, Data Regulation”.
- The NASAMER Distinguished Speaker Series at Koç University Law School (Istanbul, 13.03.26), where he delivered a presentation entitled “Behavioral Economics and Consumer Protection: From Light-Touch Regulation to Mandatory Rules”.

He is a native Greek speaker, while fluent in English, German and French.
